What is an Interventional Radiologist?

Interventional Radiology is a specialised field of medicine where the doctor uses images to guide the procedure. Medical imaging techniques like X-rays, ultrasound and MRI show the radiologist where to effect treatment. The entry point into the body is through a small skin puncture which means there is little to no scarring and recovery is rapid.

Sometimes interventional radiology is described as Vascular and Interventional Radiology (VIR) or Surgical Radiology. This procedure is also used for diagnostic purposes. Doctors qualified to do these procedures are called Interventional Radiologists, after obtaining a medical qualification they require further years of study to gain sufficient skills and experience. It’s a specialised field growing in scope and popularity and constantly evolving. The benefits are extensive and also lessen post-operation complications. Besides being used for uterine fibroids it is used in conditions in many of the body’s systems like vascular, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, genitourinary, pulmonary, musculoskeletal, and in the central nervous system.
